And when those experiences are painful, disruptive, or traumatic, they can impact every area of our lives. 

Let me just say that I’m a huge fan of EMDR therapy.

EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. (Try saying it even three times fast. BTW, this is a tongue twister for this ESL kid. But I still love and believe in the healing power of EMDR.)

To be sure, EMDR won’t solve all societal ails – but it works wonders on freeing us from limiting beliefs, distressing memories, and traumatic experiences that all tend to keep us stuck.

Have you seen the movie Groundhog Day or the more recent movie the title of which I can’t remember?
In Groundhog Day, the main character wakes up every day reliving the same day over and over again.

That’s what it feels like to have limiting beliefs that keep you rooted to the same behavior, relationship patterns, or self-loathing patterns. You’re trying to live differently and every day is seemingly different.

Yet at the same time, it’s the same. As some would say – “same shit, different day”. (In Groundhog Day it would be “same day, different shit” – the foundation stays the same, you’re stuck either way.)

How does EMDR therapy work?

Traumatic experiences – both major traumas and seemingly regular life experiences – can disrupt our memory processing, leaving the memories of these events “frozen.”

These frozen, unprocessed memories can result in emotional challenges that often feel difficult to overcome. They may also create mental and emotional blocks we are not event aware of.

By bridging both sides of the brain though eye movements or tapping, EMDR therapy helps you to work through and address these unprocessed memories and associated beliefs and blocks.

Yes! A lot of stuff can show up in couples therapy, including negative core beliefs and distressing memories that block us from fully engaging and absorbing the good that happens in couples therapy. EMDR therapy helps address these blocks.

Specialized Training

Using EMDR therapy with clients requires specialized training. First, I took the required basic 50-hour training. Ten hours of supervision were included in this basic training.

After that, I took advanced training in EMDR Therapy and became an EMDRIA* Certified EMDR Therapist. I keep my skills fresh with continued training in EMDR.
